Recovery & Follow Up

Some of our bariatric patients, especially those with a weight loss balloon or Lap Band, go home the same day as their procedure. Others stay in the hospital for one to several days. Because our bariatric procedures are often done laparoscopically, the recovery time is shorter on average than it would be with an open procedure.

The procedure you have along with your recovery and other medical conditions will determine how quickly you can go home after surgery. We will review your post-surgery guidelines in detail with you before the day of your procedure, but in general, we will ask you to be mindful of:

Moving

It will be beneficial to do some movement regularly after your surgery. This will help your recovery. Walking is a great choice of exercise. You don’t have to walk far or quickly, but consistent short walks will add up.

Vitamins

Our team will talk to you about what vitamins you should be taking. Remember, since you’re eating less and are on a restrictive food plan initially, it is very important to keep up with your vitamins.

Follow Up

Our staff will schedule follow up appointments with you. We generally set up the first appointment about a week out from your procedure. We will then continue to see you multiple times throughout your first year. Follow up throughout your weight loss journey is critical. Even though your weight loss procedure will give you a strong chance of success, no one achieves substantial weight loss without the work that complements the surgery. It is through your follow up visits that we can help you stay on track, address any challenges you’re facing, and celebrate your successes with you.
